Lagos State commissioner for Health, Jide Idris has said the containment success of Nigeria over Ebola, as declared by World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday, was phenomenal.

The commissioner, while hinting at the declaration by WHO, said the success was phenomenal because the country's case was the first urban case in decades and that the consequences could have been very terrible if  the country had not deployed creative, results-oriented strategies in the containment of the disease.

He said this was made possible as a result of a combination of factors chief of which were the well-established of structure and laws that had been put in place by the state government long before Ebola was imported into the country.

He further explained that the effective response of the Federal Government and the state government to the disease ensured that the country had the lowest cases and the lowest number of deaths.

In his words: “out of about 9000 cases globally, Nigeria only had 20 cases, representing 0.22 per cent of all cases. The country with its effective intervention also recorded eight deaths, representing 0.8 per cent of the no fewer than 4,500 global deaths.”
