According to the statement, following the sighting of the moon by various committees across the country, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, accepted the report and accordingly declared Thursday as the first day of Zulhijja, 1435.

In the lunar-based Calendar of Islam, the celebration falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days. In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
