The Pakistani army says it has killed at least 31 pro-Taliban militants during air raids and ground battles along its northwestern border with Afghanistan.

The army says the airstrikes were carried out in the Tirah Valley of the Khyber tribal district on Tuesday, killing 20 militants and destroying three of their hideouts and two ammunition dumps.

Security officials say the pro-Taliban and another banned militant group have taken refuge in the bombed area.2014-09-17

In another development, militants conducted a separate cross-border attack at a military post in the North Waziristan tribal district, Pakistani military sources said.

Eleven militants were killed when the army quelled the early morning attack.

The Pakistani army has launched a massive mop-up offensive against pro-Taliban militants in the tribal regions after a deadly attack on Karachi airport in June.

The military operations have so far killed about 1,000 militants while the army has lost more than 80 soldiers.

North Waziristan has long been home to local and al-Qaeda-linked militants who carry out cross-border attacks on US and other NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Islamabad entered an alliance with Washington in the so-called war on terror.
