The General manager of the Abia state Estate development Agency, Mr. Okechukwu Ndukwe has stated that the Agency is committed to providing low-income housing for Abians who meet the basic requirements.

Ndukwe made this known on Friday while speaking to newsmen in his Umuahia Office. “

Our mandate is to provide low-income housing for Abians. We acquire land from communities or individuals; fulfill all the necessary acquisition processes and rites. We develop the land and allocate after parcellation to beneficiaries,” he said.

He added that there are no special ways of selecting beneficiaries and that the Agency advertises to the public the availability of estates. He noted that individuals with a source of income capable of sustaining the development of the estate are usually considered.

Speaking further, he noted that the Agency is self-sustaining and financially independent on the state government. He said: “We are self-sustaining. We generate revenue and we run our office with what we generate from here.”

Recounting his challenges since assumption of office on November 1, 2017, Ndukwe said: “I inherited backlog of unpaid Salaries, unpaid house rent, unpaid bills, I inherited a grounded Agency. It was not functioning. In fact, here was picketed by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) three weeks before I came. The mandate I have from the Governor is that I must come here, open up the agency and solve all the problems. He wants the Agency to start working and start making progress.

“It was when I came that I negotiated with the NLC, signed some agreement with them which led to the opening of this office for business to continue.Between November 3rd and January 26th, 2018, I have paid 4 months’ salary. I have paid house rent; about 1.2million naira.”

According to Ndukwe, the Agency is currently developing 4 sites and would advertise to the public as soon as the parcellation is completed. More so, work is ongoing at the proposed permanent site of the Agency.
