Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has deployed six national electoral commissioners to ensure a free and fair supplementary governorship election in Imo State tomorrow.

Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Dr. Gabriel Ada, broke the news yesterday while briefing newsmen ahead the conduct of the supplementary election scheduled for April 25.

Ada stated that the deployment of the national electoral commissioners from Abuja was to strengthen the existing staff of the commission in the state to ensure that the conduct of the supplementary governorship poll was hitch-free.

He also said ad-hoc staff would not be used in the re-run election, adding that sensitive materials for the poll had arrived the state.

The resident electoral commissioner, however, said a total of 113,808 voters had collected their permanent voter cards (PVCs) in areas where the supplementary governorship would be conducted as against about 148,000 registered voters.

Ada confirmed that only those with their PVCs would be accredited using the card readers, saying manual accreditation would not be allowed during the supplementary poll.

Meanwhile, Senator Osita Izunaso has described the call for total cancellation of the April 11 governorship poll by Imo State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie, as a sign of defeat.

Senator Izunaso, who is the national organising secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), made the statement yesterday while addressing journalists in Owerri, Imo State capital, He called for outright cancellation of the exercise, he said, was in bad faith.
