Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, made a historic feat at last Saturday's Presidential election by becoming the first to unseat an incumbent in Nigeria. factnewsonline x-rays the man, Muhammadu Buhari.

A retired General, Muhammadu Buhari  was born on December 17,1942. He is from Daura in Katsina State, and of Fulani ethnic background.
He describes himself as a converted democrat and says he takes responsibility for whatever happened under his watch during his military rule.
He was the Military Head of State of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27,1985, after taking power in a military coup d'etat. The term "buharism" is ascribed to the Buhari Military government.
He ran unsuccessfully for the office  of the president in 2003, 2007, and 2011 elections.
He emerged the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in December, 2014.

 Buhari joined the Nigerian  Army in 1961, when he attended the Nigerian Military Training College,now the Nigerian Defence Academy, in Kaduna. He underwent cadets training  at Mons Officer Cadet School in England in 1962 to 1963.
From 1965 to1967, Buhari served as Commander of the Second Infantry Battalion. He was appointed Brigade Major,Sector,First Infantry Division,April 1967 to July 1967.

Buhari has served in several capacities including  General Officer Commanding,4th Infantry Division, August 1980 to January 1981, General Officer Commanding 2nd Mechanized Infantry Division, January 1981 to October 1981 and General Officer Commanding, 3rd Armed Division Nigerian Army, October 1981 to December 1983.

In August 1975, Buhari became the Governor of North Eastern State and in March 1979, Gen.  Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him as the Federal Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources.

Buhari has 10 children, five each from his late wife, Safinatu and his present wife Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.
