Early this morning, an accident happened along Enugu/Port Harcourt express way at Osisioma in Aba, Abia State. It involved a fuel tanker, with 33, 000-litre capacity, which fell flat on its side at the point opposite Nason Table Water factory. It led to its content spilling out on the road.

Youths from the near villages took advantage of the situation to run to the scene of the accident to scoop fuel, not minding the potential danger of a possible outbreak of fire.

According to eyewitness account, “The incident happened around 5:30am this morning, due to bad road”. He explained that the driver was trying to maneuver through the other lane in order to avoid the worst parts of the road, but could not make it and his vehicle flipped over.

Few policemen were seen at the scene at the time of filing this report. According to one of them: “We were alerted of the incident and on arrival we helped to rescue the driver, we have sent signal to Osisioma Police division because this is not our jurisdiction so we are expecting their arrival including the Road safety because as it stands we cannot do anything to stop these youths (those scooping fuel). Our number is insignificant compared to the mammoth crowd we have here”

The free-for-all fuel-scooping eventually turned to a fight when both married women and young ladies fought over the buckets they were using to scoop fuel.
