LET US THINK VERY WELL

The happenings in different states have heated up the polity. Of course, that should be the case. Because the Nigerian state is ripe for elections at different levels, and betrayal has grown tall among politicians. Men are betraying their brothers. And they call it politics. A pity. More, lawyers are preparing to strike business deals with candidates who may not be successful at the polls. And many more things are happening at this time when the cloud has worn a political face. But the Nigerian people should be tutored to avoid making mistakes that would last for the next four years. Since such mistakes could be avoided, it becomes necessary, if not important that Nigerians should be in tune with reality. They shouldn’t pursue shadows, for such act could be deceptive like the mirage of the desert.

Is defection from one political party to another a crime? Should one sell his soul to his party? Even if it is good for one to obey the constitution of his party, should one defect because his friends have defected? Should selfishness be ruled out of politics? These and many more questions should be answered now that Nigerian politics has become interesting. Many a politician should have reasons why they are following top politicians, who have defected because of their selfish interests. If the man who defected doesn’t have a good political record, why should you follow him? Politicians, without mincing words, are selfish when it comes to taking decisions.

Specifically, the Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, reportedly, will decamp to the All Progressives Congress from the People Democratic Party, and he is interested in contesting for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Why is he defecting to the APC when the members of the PDP are still in love with him? It is certain that if he decamps, many politicians, maybe his followers, will decamp as well, but without reasons. And if they do so, their thinking should be questioned. Let’s give it to Hon. Aminu that he has the right to decamp. But why is he decamping? Maybe he wants to follow the Governor of Sokoto State, who has defected to the APC. Adding that there is factionisation of the Sokoto branch of the PDP, and Chief Tony Anenih, the Chairman of the Board of Trustee of PDP, was in the state last week, but could not resolve the matter. Should that be considered as the reason why the Speaker has decided to leave the PDP, having known that a member of a political party is allowed to defect to another party if there is a faction in his party? Or has he considered deeply his track record as an astute politician and detribalized Nigerian, as an APC member had said, and concluded that the PDP is no longer the party that should be in the frontline of Nigerian politics?

Whatever be his reasons, the people of Sokoto State should look before leaping so as to have reasons for their actions. It happened in Rivers State, and some members of the PDP in the state defected. But if you ask Amaechi’s faction why they decamped, they may not be able to give you reasons that are convincing. I am interested in the reasoning power of most politicians. Why am I following a particular politician to another party? Is he a better candidate for a political position? Am I following him because of what I will get from him at the end of the day, having known that he has not performed in the last three years he has been in office? Nigerians should think. When we think very well before acting, the tendency is there that we will act wisely, and we will not regret our decisions.

In truth, the PDP in Sokoto State has been hit by something short of catastrophe, and many politicians are toeing the path of selfishness. But what I am saying is that politicians should have reasons for defecting to another political party. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal has remained a wise lawmaker, but if he should contest against the incumbent President, would he achieve his political ambitions? Truth be said, the Nigerian people are waiting to know the flag bearer of the APC. If they are careful and wise enough in their selection of who represents them in the presidential election, then the PDP will face an opposition that may change the direction of the wind.
