Delta Local Government Elections report

The much awaited Delta Local Government elections, which commenced this morning in all the 25 Council areas in the State, have been concluded.

The election was to usher in new Chairmen and Councillors who will take over from the Transition Chairmen that have been conducting the affairs of the local governments in the past three years.

When Factnewsonline went round Asaba, accreditation at the various wards and units commenced at about eight o’clock in the morning, and voter turn-out was very impressive. The people appear well informed of the exercise and well prepared for it.

The conduct was orderly.

The presiding officers were all there while the parties’ chairmen were there as well. At Ward 7 in Ibusa, Oshimili North, accreditation actually started at about 8am, turnout was impressive, but a heated argument went on among the people.

The people were protesting the provision of one unit instead of two. They said there should have been two units, 1 and 2, but that Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) provided materials for just one unit with the promise of bringing the other unit's materials later.

At Aniocha South and North, the conduct of the election proper showed that materials arrived late, at about 11:45am. The people there waited for accreditation by the DSIEC officials without seeing any.

At Ogwashi-uku Ward 4 with four units, the people turned out en-mass as early as 8am to get accredited and commence voting, but that was not the case because at about noon when Factnewsonline monitored the process, accreditation was yet to commence.

The situation was not different at DSIEC ward 8 in Isselle-uku, Aniocha North Local Government area where it was gathered that some of the people angrily left the voting venue when the Commission's staff did not show up.

However, a former Chairman of the Council area, Hon. Jaunty Okwudi attributed the late arrival of the materials to the rain which fell earlier. But this was different from the report of the Ad Hoc staff and the presiding officer who spoke to our reporter. "We got the materials from DSIEC office in Isselle-uku at about 10:30am", they said.

As at 1:03pm, accreditation was still on while voting was yet to start at this Ward which was located in Omade Primary School. It has three units.

A visit to the other units in the same ward showed massive turnout of voters and in orderly conduct. Accreditation was completed, and voting as in progress.

A member of the State Executive Council, the Commissioner in charge of the Delta Micro-credit Scheme, Dr. Anthonia Ashiedu described the process as free and fair. She expressed so much confidence in the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission in conducting credible elections while urging the electorate to do the needful even in the next general elections.

As at the time of filing in this report, voting has been completed in most parts of the state while it is yet to commence at Unit 4 Ward 7 in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area.
