Morocco has withdrawn its rights to host the African Cup of Nations next year due to fears of the viral disease ebola, which has ravaged a number of African nations over the last few months.

The north African nation had previously made a request to the Confederations of African Football (CAF) for the postponement of the tournament which was set for January next year, a request CAF turned down.

With Morocco’s withdrawal however, South Africa is tipped to be handed the hosting rights following reports that CAF President Issa Hayatou met with South Africa Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan to discuss the matter.

South Africa was initially scheduled to host the tournament in 2017 following the withdrawal of Libya as hosts due to ongoing fighting there.

Egypt meanwhile had also indicated interest in hosting next year’s Nations Cup, stating its confidence in organising the competition under short notice having successfully hosted the tournament in 2006.
