Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology has advised the staff in the Ministry to be more committed and patriotic in the discharge of their duties.

Onu gave the advice while speaking at the 2018 Performance Award Ceremony for outstanding Staff of the Ministry on Tuesday in Abuja.

The minister said such efforts would fast-track achievements of the ministry’s stated goals towards national development.

“We must rediscover those values that made our ancestors achieve great things in the past.

“Discipline, hard work, selflessness, commitment to duty and dedication to cherished principles are always needed for the progress of any society.

“It may not be easy, however, it is the only way left for us in our march to greatness, a reward system designed to encourage people to nurture such virtues becomes extremely important,” Onu said.

According to him, recognising excellence through awards would improve the productivity of workers.

Onu added that rewarding excellence would also help to fight and defeat extreme poverty in the country.

“This will put us in a situation where we can feed, shelter and cloth all Nigerians, as well as fight illiteracy and improve the health of all citizens,’’he said.

Earlier, Mr Bitrus Nabasu, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, stressed that recognising excellence in any organisation ought to spur healthy rivalry between employees towards improving performance.

“This occasion is a clarion call for a change of attitude, for a positive upward adjustment of our work habits, for deliberate decisions to embrace the ideals of diligence, excellence, discipline and conscientiousness.

“Collectively, our genuine and assiduous input will culminate in the institutionalisation of the much desired, much promoted Efficient, Productive, Incorruptible and Citizen-centered (EPIC) culture,’’ he said.

One of the awardees, Mr Agoro Olarewaju, an Assitant Director, in the Bio-Resources Technology Department of the ministry, who spoke on behalf of others, thanked the minister for creating such performance award.

“It is indeed a privilege and a call to service, for us to do more,’’ he said.

16 members of staff were recognised at the ceremony.
