The Progressive Women and Youth Support Initiative, a nongovernmental organization, has disclosed that it trained over 210 widows and women divorcees in Bauchi state on various skills in order to empower and make them self-reliant.

National coordinator of the organization, Hajiya Aishatu Jafar Bashir, disclosed this yesterday during the graduation ceremony of the trainees held at Liman Katagum village, Bauchi.

According to her, the women were trained for three weeks on tailoring, knitting, soap and cream making among others.

She said the beneficiaries who were selected in the village were also given equipment donated by an aspirant to the House of Representatives, Alhaji Abdu Ilelah, assuring that the gesture would be extended to other parts of the state.

Also speaking, the village head of Liman Katagum, Alhaji Yakubu Abubakar Ghani, commended the NGO for training the women in the village, asking them to sustain the programme.

He also urged the beneficiaries to utilise the knowledge and equipment donated to them judiciously by setting up businesses.

The traditional ruler, who promised to continue to support the NGO to work in the area, tasked other corporate organisations to replicate such gestures in the state with a view to complementing government efforts in poverty alleviation.
