The Lawyer handling the case of the suspected kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (aka Evans), Barr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, has accused operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team  (IRT) of stealing from his client.

Ogungbeje, of Lawflex Chambers, Lagos, also accused IRT operatives of gross misconduct, indiscipline and sexual harassment.

In a petition to the Police Service Commission (PSC), which was copied to the Inspector-General of Police, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Amnesty International, Ogungbeje alleged that his client had briefed his chambers that IRT operatives forcefully extorted cash and other items from his client.

According to The Sun newspaper, Ogungbeje listed some of the items as N50 million, another N5 million from Evan’s wife, 25 Mack trucks, Brigade wristwatch valued at $117,000, Pendant cross worth $70,000, necklace worth $25,000, Virtu phone worth $30,000, Virtu signature phone worth $17,000, $10,000 dollars allegedly extorted by one ASP, five pieces of Saphono Rucci diamond rings worth $100,000, Lexus 470 SUV, JA Grand Cherokee Jeep and a 400 Mistsubishi bus.

Also forcefully taken, according to the petition, were one Toyota Highlander and a Samsung television set worth N6.5million, among others. He alleged further that Evans’ girlfriend, Amaka Offor told the suspected kidnapper that IRT operatives sexually molested and abused her.

“It is very unfortunate that police officers would be involved in such gross misconduct and indiscipline in taking advantage of a criminal suspect in their custody to perpetrate high-level extortion and sexual molestation,” the petition noted.  “Sir, you will agree with us that the allegations are too weighty to be ignored. We do not intend to jump the gun or draw conclusion on these high-wire allegations against IRT. ”We urge you to constitute a special investigation panel of enquiry to investigate the monumental extortion, indiscipline, sexual abuse and human right violation against IRT.”

In a swift reaction, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO)CSP Jimoh  moshood denied the allegations ,describing them as absolute falsehood ,misleading and deliberate attempt to cast aspersion on the discrete investigation carried out by the police in the offences committed by Evans ,who has pleaded guilty in court to multiple kidnappings, murder ,armed robbery and other capital offences.

CSP Moshood said: “Virtually all the items erroneously claimed by Ogungbeji to have been forcefully and corruptibly extorted from his client were found out to have been exaggerated. For avoidance of doubt ,all monetary exhibits and other valuables, including houses and exotic vehicles were not extorted but recovered by IRT during investigation and were duly registered and will be tendered in court as exhibits as the trial progresses.

“No police personnel within the team or anywhere else involved in the investigation of all the cases linked to Evans engaged in any asexually molestation of his alleged girlfriend, Amaka Offor as claimed. We see the allegations as deliberate distraction and ill motive by Ogungbeje to pervert the end of justice .He is advised to face his client’s case in court and not misleading the public”, he stated.
