A Cleric, Christopher Owolabi, wants the Federal Government to end the increase in the possession of firearms by unauthorised persons, saying that it posed a threat to the nation’s unity, peace and stability.

Owolabi is the General Overseer, Christ Apostolic Church, Ori-Oke Irapada, along Omu-Aran-Iloffa Expressway, Omu-Aran.

He made the call during a special prayer for the sustenance of the nation’s democratic system and economic growth in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara on Friday.

The cleric, who spoke against the backdrop of the recent killings during a church service in Ozubulu, Anambra, described the development as a threat to the nation’s growth and peaceful co-existence.

He said that the ugly situation was also a threat to the sustenance of the nation’s highly cherished democracy.

According to him, such evil act require the prompt attention of both the state House of Assembly and the National Assembly.

Owolabi urged the National Assembly to undertake the review of the existing law guiding arms possession.

The cleric noted that the issue of arms proliferation was already instilling fear in the minds of the citizens.

“There is urgent need for stringent legislation to discourage citizens from illicit trade in firearms.

“Unauthorised citizens should be discouraged from being in possession of arms to ensure a violence-free society.”

He said that there was a need for synergy among the Nigeria Customs and Immigration Services as well as border states in order to stop the ugly trend.

Owolabi further urged the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to ensure strict compliance with broadcasting regulations, to prevent youths from gaining access to violent films.

He suggested total overhauling of the security system to align with global standard.

The cleric also stressed the need to create the enabling environment for security agencies in the country to function effectively, by providing them with the necessary equipment as well as welfare packages.

“With all these in place, the issue of incessant kidnappings, rape and other related anti-social vices will be adequately tackled and reduced to the barest minimum.

He advised the political class to be tolerant and shun acts capable of truncating the nation’s democratic system.
