Eggonland in Nasarawa State was split at the weekend when two separate forums announced two different persons as the chosen candidates of the Eggon ethnic group to contest the governorship election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

While Senator Solomon Ewuga emerged after a screening conducted by a group, Eggon Stakeholders for the Actualization of Eggon Candidate 2015, another pressure group chose Labaran Maku, the information minister as the preferred candidate.

While the body which unveiled Ewuga conducted its exercise at Nasarawa-Eggon, the traditional headquarters of the Eggon, the pro-Maku group held its meeting at Endehu, outside the headquarters, but within the same local government. The two meetings held simultaneously on Saturday.

The first group which screened Ewuga, disqualified Dr. James Angbazo, eldest son of Alhaji Bala Angbazo, who is the paramount ruler of Eggon people. Hon. James Namo, who signed a statement of the body announcing the decision, said Dr. Angbazo refused to present himself to be screened during the exercise which commenced for about a month now.

Namo, who heads the 15-man forum said during the meeting that four candidates, namely Ewuga and Maku of the PDP, and Angbazo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as Mr. Matthew Ombugaku of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), were invited for screening.

He said apart from Dr. Angbazo, the three appeared and submitted themselves for screening, agreeing to abide by the outcome of the exercise.

He said Ewuga emerged after a general consensus that he possessed the pedigree as the most widely accepted politician in Eggonland and all of the state, to beat the rest of the candidates who appeared for the screening. He however added that the body decided to allow Ombugaku of the APGA to run because he is alone on the platform of his party.

But in what appeared as a rejection of the outcome of the screening, a pro-Maku group led by Raymond Akolo and Yakubu Ada, said in a statement after their meeting that it chose Maku because of his wide acceptance within and beyond Eggonland.

“Mr. Maku is the most widely accepted choice for governor among other contenders within the Eggon community and across the state,” the statement said.
