Several news sources including Thisday Newspaper have reported that APC's governorship candidate in Kogi and former Governor of the State, Abubakar Audu, is dead. He reportedly died of cardiac arrest, popularly called "heart attack", in his hometown.

According to Thisday, He died Sunday afternoon from what was believed to be a cardiac arrest. Sources said he started vomiting blood and could not be resuscitated.

It is not certain if he gave up the ghost before the election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state or after the declaration. Audu was leading the PDP candidate and current governor, Wada, in results declared by INEC from the 21 LGAs with 240, 864 votes against 193,514 votes. The election was declared inconclusive as a result of the number of canceled votes (49,953) being higher than the margin of victory of APC's Audu. Supplementary elections were expected at a later date to be announced by INEC.
