There was plenty of Football drama in the ongoing FIFA Football World cup competition as Costa Rica defeated “late goals Specialists”, Greece, 5:4 on penalties to advance.

The Costa Ricans went ahead in the 52nd minute through a Ruiz goal but conceded a late equalizer by Papastathopoulos in full time after going a man down for most of the second half. Duarte had bagged a second yellow card in the 66th minute and was sent off. Extra time of 30 minutes could not separate the two teams as proceedings remained 1:1 after 120 minutes of tiring football.

In the ensuing penalties, Costa Rica scored 5 of their penalties while their goal keeper saved one Greek penalty to send the American nation into cloud nine. This is their first time of qualifying for the quarter finals of the world cup.

By this victory, Costa Rica is now the first CONCACAF nation to make it to the last eight of the world cup after USA in 2002.

Earlier in the day, Netherland had rallied late to beat hard fighting Mexico 2:1 to book a place in the Quarter Final of Brazil 2014.

Netherland will meet Costa Rica in the Quarter Finals in what promises to be an exciting Europe versus America contest.
