Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has won the PDP governorship primary in Delta in a keenly contested election. He emerged against Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan's wish for a successor.

The primary ended at about 7:46pm with him pulling 406 votes from total votes of about 1100 delegates drawn from across the state. He was subsequently declared winner and the flag bearer of the ruling party in the 2015 general elections by the Returning Officer, SundayKarimu.

Olorogun David Edevbie followed with 299 votes and Rt.Hon Victor Ochei scored 185. Others are: Gbagi Kenneth - 2; Johnson Opone - 3; Tony Obuh - 5; Charles Emetulu - 4; Sylvester Monye -10; Ovie Omo Agege -10; Godsday Orubebe - 49; Ndudi Elumelu -50; Gabriel Oyibode - 3; Godswil Obielum - 22; Festus Okunbor - 5; Peter Okocha -6; Sam Obi -10; Chukwuemeka Uwaka - 1.

The members of the State Executive Council were asked to leave the venue before the results were announced. The Returning Officer said that they were not supposed to be there because they were biased.

He maintained that their presence at the center of the primary is biased since they were not delegates.

There were 25 aspirants who contested for the PDP primaries among whom were 22 males and 3 females who unfortunately could not pull even with the males.

Meanwhile Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has commended the process. He said it was very peaceful, free and transparent. He called on the aspirants to to see the contest as a family affair and join hands with the winner for the betterment of the State. Dr Uduaghan also called on Senator Okowa to close ranks with other aspirants, extending a hand of fellowship to them.

Senator Okowa is currently the Chairman, Senate Committee on health. He is from Owa-alero in Ika Northeast LGA of Delta. He was a former Commissioner for Health under former Governor James Ibori. He also served as the Secretary to the State Government under Governor Uduaghan before he proceeded to the Senate in 2011.
