Current news reveals that Ibrahim Babangida, former military President in Nigeria, has joined other prominent Northern leaders to call for concerted action against Boko Haram, the rampaging Islamic terror group.

He spoke recently in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Hausa Service, where he declared that self-defence, which amounted to a Jihad, should be the first action of every Nigerian against the Boko Haram sect. Babangida went on to express gladness that Muslim leaders like Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, have started paying serious attention to the activities of the sect, and called for prayers and fasting for peace to reign.

He insisted that nothing was wrong if people being attacked prepared themselves for self-defence, saying the act could be regarded as Jihad.

Condemning the killings in Kano and other parts of the country by the insurgents, he commiserated with the government and people of Kano over the recent killings during a Juma’at.

Unlike many commentators who have spoken on the subject, Babangida expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian military to contain the crisis. He equally said that as a soldier, he believed the crisis was not insurmountable.

For some time now, prominent Northern Nigerian leaders have been criticised for not doing enough to stop the menace of the sect. Many were accused of not speaking out against the sect, which was seen as a reason the sect have remained unchallenged by the people.

It was in line with that that Ayo Oritsejafor, President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) chided the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, when he learnt that he (Abubakar) wrote to Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL), accusing them of actions that were not Islamic.

The Chrisitian leader considered Boko Haram to be deadlier than ISIL. He said of the letter, “His Eminence said he wrote a letter to ISIS, I have to truly congratulate you for that because that was a very good move. I didn’t know about it until today and I am so glad it happened. But I want to appeal that you also write to Boko Haram because Boko Haram is worse than ISIS.”

He stated that Boko Haram has killed more people than ISIS, that they have caused more atrocities than ISIS, and that they need to be written to as well. He believed that would help. “I have made an appeal several times that there are some of our leaders who must come together, religious, political and traditional. They must come and discuss’’ he added.
