News emerged at the weekend that the US State Department shut down its unclassified network after it was noticed to have been hacked.
The shut down which is said to be part of scheduled routine maintenance would impact email traffic and access to public websites.

The hackers are said to have breached security in portions of the systems handling non classified emails.
The US postal service was quoted last week to have said that the hackers stole personal sensitive information from its employees in a large data breach this year, and hacked some customer data as well.

The breach affected over 800,000 people from both public and private sectors.
To solve the problem, some white house users are disconnected from the network, with the computers and systems still intact.

The Washington post quoted sources as saying hackers believed to be working for the Russian government are suspected to be responsible.
The US State Department is working with the FBI on an investigation.
